Carlton got an early jump with four of the first five goals but the hawks got back four goals to lead by 3 points at 1/4 time. The hawks than kicked clear in the second with three unanswered goals to lead by 20 points at 1/2 time. The match than became a blow out 7 goals to two giving hawthorn a 49 point lead at 3/4 time before Carlton closed a bit in the last but hawthorn won by 26 points.
