aeroperu 603 departs lima for santiago chile a 4 year old 757 is operating the flight with 61 passengers 7 flight attendants and 2 pilots. the pilots are captain eric shriber 58 and fo david fernandez 42. takeoff is normal from runway 15 at 1240am. almost immediately the first sign of trouble the altitude indicator reads 0 on all indications which is not right they are flying than they lose the air speed indicator which reads 0 they head out over the pacific ocean. they than get a weird warning rudder ratio which is false but confuses the crew. the indications come back to life but are not telling the truth as they are decending but they are trying to climb. captain schriber tries to engage the autopilot but doesn’t work they than get mach speed trim warning and than an overspeed. the crew declare an emergency and request return to lima for an emergency landing. the crew request help from the ils which might not work as the altitude is from the faulty computer. in the dark the crew request help get there air speed from atcs computer. what the crew don’t know is they are deceniding not holding 10000 feet (as the indicators say) and the crew are still confused they suspect ground crew had mishandled the aircraft. the crew need help with altitude and speed (altitude is impossible to tell). the crew are compltely confused the crew activate the speed breaks but get another overspeed and have to choose what to do with the speed. more warnings lead to more confusion the crew try and get help and get a 707 to find them and help guide them in. and than they get a stall warning with the overspeed are two contradictory warnings. than they get the gpws terrain alarm. the crew head further out to sea to avoid a possible colision with a mountain but unfortunately the terrain alarm is right and indicating they will hit the water soon. the last altitude indication is 9700 which is clearly wrong after a argument over the gear the plane hits water after a 20 second struggle the plane sinks killing everyone onboard. they put the first officers uncle in charge of the investigation and its his first case. 9 bodies are in the water the rest sank with the plane. the investigations concern about the relationship betwee the chief one and the first officer is not warrented as he does a good job. the plane clearly didn’t break up in flight as the wreckage is tight. they find that matience cleaned the plane night off the crash and no noticed it he is charged with manslaughter. a similar crash 8 mounths earlier in the dominiac republic should have lead to changes as it was another 757. the lawsuits begin with boeing and aeroperu in the firing line for compensation eventually they settle it out of court and the pilots also get some of the blame. eventually they get a big settlement the victims and aeroperu goes broke.
