a dc-10 departs memphis as a cargo flight with 4 people including a off duty pilot who could lose his job for san jose california in 1994 he deactivates the cvr but it is put back on by the flight enginneer callaway the off duty pilot was supposed to be the flight enginner but was changed due to over doing his hours. the climb is normal captain sanders fo tucker and flight engineer paterson are the crew in command on climb out through 19000 feet the fo is flying the plane when callaway attacks the crew with weapons injuring the crew badly with head injuries and they are confused the captain and fligt enginnere leave the cockpit to fight callaway while the fo flies the plane and tries to out manuver the attacker and fly back to memphis luckiily he is ex navy but he nearly pushes the plane to its limits to disarm callaway. because of the high speed at climb power this doesn’t help. the plane is nearly at the speed of sound but he manages to recover it. the crew are badly hurt still. the fo calls memphis declaring an emergency and requesting armed intervention on return to memphis. the crew are handed to approach but he is worried they are flying away from memphis the fo is flying the plane still to its limits to fight the attacker but keeps his manuvers unpredictable. at one point the captain replaces the fo at the controls which left the plane not under control for a minute. he heads for memphis but can’t dump fuel on manual they need the longest runway which will still be risky even on 36l the longest runway despite being overspeed and overweight they land ssafely with all 4 surviving callaway is arrested and is sent to jail none of the pilots fly agian due to their injuries.
