ash is overconfident with two badges and is heading to vermilion city and beats a trainers rattata with pidgeotto for his 10th straight win so the trainer suggests he battles aj a trainer who is unbeaten so ash finds his unoffical gym. the battle starts with aj using sandshrew (a ground type) and ash using pidgeotto first (Due to pikachus attacks not being able to effect sandshrew) and despite pidgeotto flying it is no match neither is butterfree with the same advantage and pikachu won’t battle giving aj his 99th victory which has ash upset at losing and finds out that aj is harsh on his pokemon using crazy training techniques such as forcing sandshrew in water and using a taming whip. team rocket are seen spying on the gym and want to steal the pokemon. ash and aj disagree on strategies leading to a fight that doesn’t help anyone and after more arguments. team rocket try and get pikachu but steal sandshrew instead due to it putting the strength jacket on pikachu when aj finds sandshrew is missing it leads to him being upset and ash trying to lead a mutiny in the gym it doesn’t work. sandshrew gets away from team rocket it and meowth find their way to the gym which leads to ash realising aj is a good guy and they become friends aj than battles team rocket who turn up for his 100th win which he does easily. aj than leaves for his own journey saying goodbye to ash and friends who continue their journey.
