ash and friends think they have arrived in the safari zone but its a pokemon where they see a bunch of tauros out of control which ash wants pikachu to battle but it won’t when ash uses charmander it is stopped by a growlithe which ash tries to than battle with squirtle but a woman named lara laramie stops her who explains its a pokemon reserve so you can’t catch pokemon here and that is a famous place to raise pokemon in the wild she reveals her ponyta won’t hurt anyone that it trusts which is clear ash will have to earn its trust at some point. lara reveals there is a big party there that night and the big pokemon race is the next day we rae introduced to her rival dario and his dodrio who were creating problems at the ranch. the party is interupted by team rocket attacking the tauros with something during the procedure to fix it laras injured so she convinces ash to enter with her ponyta to beat dario. dario makes a deal with team rocket that if he wins they get a big reward by team rocket cheating for him. ash agrees to enter with ponyta misty and brock also enter with starmie and onix respectivaely (pikachu and squirtle enter somehow as well). team rockets cheating already leads to trainers being disqualified by fighting each other. ash and dario lead most of the race except when a electrode briefly leads but is taken out by team rocket. ponyta is in the lead at this point but getting over the water using stones is hard a trainer and its rhyhorn and brock pull out at this point. as they stop to eat food ash and dario are still neck and neck with misty and pikachu also close team rocket attack but misty convinces ash to try and catch dario as the rest eat. team rocket reveal themselves as the cheaters. it is a close race between dario and ash but ponyta evolves into rapidassh helping ash win the race. dario accuses ash of cheating which is hypercritical and gets sent off ash is given a trophy. team rocket get pecked by darios dodrio and ash and friends continue their journey.
