air crash investigation season 5 episode 3 behind closed doors american 96 turkish 981

in 1972 a brand new dc-10 operating american airlines flight 96 out of detroit michigan for buffalo new york. the pilots are experiecened but don’t have much experience in the dc-10 as its new. the plane was only introduced that year to airlines it is only the 5th ever built. the climbout starts normal until 3500 meters when the flight attendnat goes to turn the coffee machine on as she does a explosion rocks the airliner creating a hole in the floor of the dc-10. the controls are damaged and enigine 2 fails and briefly all the engines go to idle but the wing engines fix with the throttles. the hydrollics are damaged and the tail is jammed to the right. the crew try and return to detroit but its not easy luckily no one is killed but if they crash its not looking good. the flight attendants tell the pilots about the hole and the plane is badly damaged. against the odds they land safely despite being a fast landing with the gear going onto the grass. the problem that caused all this was a failure of the cargo door due to the design of it being a new type of door that was designed for money over safety by doing more storage space the ntsb find the leaver is not fail safe and can not always work they where designed. the faa demands fixes to the door design which the ntsb recommends. but two years later march 3 1974 a turkish dc-10 has 346 people on board from paris to london operated by plane no 29 off the maufactoring line operating flight 981. the crew are worried about last minute passengers due to a strike at a british airline but they do close the cargo door almost on scheudle. as they climb it is normal until the same thing happens as the american flight at 3300 meters but the damage is much more severe though to the plane even though its a whole and 2 rows of seats are gone. the crew fight to save the dc-10 from the nose dive and barely start to recover when they crash killing all 346 people on board the deadliest non-747 crash and the deadliest at the time (Currently the 4th of all time). a journalist realises that it is the same thing all overr again and they are proven correct in fact a gentlemans agreemnet to avoid air worithness directive meant the problem was never fixed and the only small measure didn’t help.

next time a 747 fire was it appartheid related.
