after 6 rounds the saints were on top undefeated two games clear having not played finals than they dropped off and another supprsiing challenger to the blues emerged in south who had not finished top 4 yet either at the end of the season they were 2nd and 3rd behind the blues with the pies rounding out the 4. with the lions nose diving to last for the first time from 4 striaght grand finals but with odds and evens could change.

lions suddenly turned around winning all 3 to give the spoon to the dons with the lions finishing 5th the top 4 unchanged.
finals summary
south and blues easily beat pies and saints with the blues going back to back over the swans (the 2nd of many runners up for south and sydney over the years).
most interesting st kilda
tihs is out of respect for them finally having a finals berth and a good year would have considered lions and swans as well for obvious reasons. a 6-0 start had people thinking they would acctaully get to the grand only winning one of their next 8 against last place essendon in round 10 and only lead melbourne on percentage at the end of the rregular season but two more wins was enoough to secure 3rd passing th epies but lost to the blues in the semi.

after a bad loss to the saints to start they won 3 straight before losing to swans the other losees in round 9 to the cats and round 15 to the swans who they would beat in the grand having beat the saints in the semis to go back to back.
odds and evens end after this season so its similar finals system till 1931 (except 1924) and two new clubs richmond and university.
