three new teams hawthorn, north and footscrary joined the competition
season summary
this was a five team battle with the lions missing out on the 4 despite north winning their first game over the cats in round 1 the new teams didn’t start well finishing bottom 3 with the hawks getting the wooden spoon the blues were worse of the old teams finishing 9th only above north on percentage the 4 were geelong (cats), collingwood essendon and an improved melbourne not in that order.
hawthorns season
every year i will give you a round up of the hawks year while they didn’t look good early losing their first 4 supprisingly coming closest to beating the pies in round 3 level at 3/4 time and losing by 17 in round 5 they had their first win over the dogs their first win over an established side was in round 13 over the saints by 3 points one more win over the roos the other new team got the hawks last with 3 wins.
finals summary
both semis were upests pies knocking dons out while the dees beat cats the pies beat the dees but the cats finally got their first flag over the pies by 10 points.
interesting season melbourne
a strong season losing to the pies in round 2 wasn’t bad their next blemish a draw with the tigers in round 6 a 4 goal loss to the cats in round 9 lost them ground in 3rd pies beat them again in round 13 in round 16 had a shock loss to north not the roos biggest upset win of the season amazingly they stunned the cats in the semi but lost to the pies in a prelim.
premiers geelong
had a dominant year after a loss to the roos in round 1 only losing to the saints in round 14 after that (a week after the saints were the only established side to lose to the hawks) by 11 points. they finished 1st but lost to the dees in the first week before beating the pies in the grand final.
