all eyes were on if the pies could break the all time record and do a 4 peat with 15 wins got them 1st ahead of the blues on percentage way ahead of the tigers and cats the other finalists by 4 games dees just missed out on percentage again with late loses as was the dons by a game. north recorded their 3rd wooden spoon.
hawthorn summary
a round 1 win over the saints (first time they won in round 1) had a little bit of hope but hten returned to mediocrity close loses to the pies and blues didn’t hurt but poor loss to the dons and tigers a 1 point loss to the dogs showed the hawks aren’t fully easy beats but a big loss to south who were winless before that before finally breaking through to stun the cats (first win against an eventual finalist and grand finalist) beating the roos in round 10 got them safety from last other wins over the dogs in round 13 and won the last 2 over the roos and a big shock win knocking the dees out of the 4 despite finishing 10th above the other expansion teams dogs and roos.

4 weeks to go they were likely to be a threat to the pies (who started their slump by beating the dees in round 15) while they beat the blues the next week they were up there until the hawks stunned them at the end dropping them to 5th.
finals summary
when the pies beat perenial oppoent the tigers a 4 peat looked like a formality but the blues got stunned by the cats than the cats forced the pies to a grand final in the prelim but the pies got the job done wininng 4 in a row the only afl team to do so and their 9th overall.

only lost 4 games the last before the prelim in round 10 to the blues before that round 4 to the cats and round 5 supprisingly to the lions but looked vulnerable after losing the prelim but still got the job done.
