ash is late to start his journey as in the show and gets a pikachu which after saving him from some spearow wins it over. the rest of the movie is mostly different to the series ash makes a rival/friend in varity and investigate ho-oh with a rival who originally had ash’s charmander also playing a role but it ends well.
