sydney v freo scg friday night well regardless of who wins they’ll be the underdog next week despite being the top 2 seeds and that feels regardless of their grand final opponent finals record 2-2 (with the home team winning each time) this is the 3rd prelim between the sides swans won in 06 freo won in 13 but both lost the grand final the next week ironically freos win before they beat the swans in 13 was against geelong but freo still have never won outside of perth in the finals against a team other then geelong and if there going to win the flag have to break that history twice now the swans off field issues haven’t hurt them on the field in fact there playing better since the scandal which is hard to believe and freo are unreliable in finals and last time they travelled to this neck of the woods they lost to gws who finished 12th this maybe a suprise but i’m going the home team but it feels 50/50. tip sydney
hawthorn v brisbane mcg saturday twillight this is a big test for the hawks and after dominating the lions when the hawks were bad now there good it has been reversed the lions have won the last 3 clashes only once though in a hawk home game (last year at the g i was there i remember unfortunately). this fixture is known for throwing up upsets but there is no clear favourite and this is the first time they have versed in a finals game (the last time the hawks played lions in a final 1986 a prelim which was against the now non-existant fitzroy who merged with brisbane in 1996 hawks won by 56 that day i will say lions have never beaten hawks in a final yet but its a very small sample size fiztroy only made the finals 3 times the same years as the hawks and versed twice). this is only the 6th time hawks and brisbane made the 8 together and the closest to versing at any stage margin wise was 2001 when the hawks fell 9 short of playing the lions in the grand final. now i have finished this history lesson to my tip its a very much 50/50 game the g holds no fears to brisbane and they had a similar prelim last year against the pies but the hawks this year don’t have the pies issues of looking like they peaked too early and an old list. this will decide the flag favourite and i’m going my team the home team. tip hawthorn
