ash and friends are back in viridian city and are impressed how the town has changed and ash is ready for his final gym battle. as ash is about to enter the gym and is quite excited gary shows up and cuts in the line so he can battle the gym leader after making fun of ash who is not allowed in the gym to watch the match. after misty makes another snark comment about ash which makes him feel down ash accidentally throws togepi into a fearow which team rocket are watching and decide to grab togepi which jessie risks her life to get from a dangerous situation. meanwhile gary battles team rockets boss giovanni (who is the gym leader) in a battle three on three gary wins the first match nidoking (Gary’s) vs golem (giovanni’s) and arcanine (gary’s) vs kingler (giovanni’s) after gary makes fun of giovanni he decides to battle using a masked pokemon (mewtwo which beats all of gary’s pokemon easily). jessie and james than try and bring togepi to giovanni who says its useless but is called away with a problem so he leaves the gym in the hands of jessie and james including the gym badge. ash and friends are still looking for togepi and misty is quite upset when they find it inside the gym and find gary and his cheerleaders knocked out from the battle with mewtwo at this point jessie and james turn up ready to battle ash saying if ash wins he’ll get the badge. the match starts badly for ash with bulbasaur losing to kingler and squirtle losing to machamp and ash gets hurt as a result of a trick team rocket do with the gym to shock the trainer if its hurt but pidgeotto stuns rhydon and than pikachu shocks the other pokemon of team rocket winning ash the match but team rocket won’t give ash the badge and admit to cheating but the shocking machine that team rocket had sends them away and ash gets the earth badge which falls from team rocket. ash and friends decide to head to pallet town to find where the pokemon league is.
