there were 14 rounds (each team verse twice) then the odd teams and even teams verse with the best of them playing off for the right to play the minor premier (in the case the minor premier won the odds it went striaght to a grand final) this lasted till 1900.
home and away summary
apart from a first up upset by carlton over south the blues and saints were filling space again this season although the blues drew with dees when they were sliding. melbourne were acctually 3-0 but only managed two more wins to finish 6th two games ahead of carlton. south finished 5th despite kicking only one goal twice in a game but still won half. geelong were 4th 9-5 but the main contnders were essendon 11-3 on top who were the most dangerous again but a last round loss to collingwood who were slow starters but won 6 straight to get 2nd and a much improved fitzroy levle with collingwood but behind them on percentage.
odds and evens summary
the only upset was fitzroy beating essendon to win the odds group all the evens games went to script which meant fitzroy would play collingwood to see who will play essendon for the flag.
most interesting team melbourne
i only chose melbourne to avoid picking collingwood twice in a row they were the other major consideration
first two rounds they smashed saints and blues and looked like they might go far after beating collingwood in round 3 then things fall aprt losing to fizroy and essendon might be expected but 1.7 against south they bounce back to upset geelong and beat the saints a draw with carlton was their last non-loss till the evens win over the saints scoring less then 20 three times finishing 6-10-1 in 6th.
finals summary
fitzroy the only team with no finals experience beat the pies in the playoff and then beat the dons to win their first flag with only one goal between them after half time.
premiers fitzroy
after a poor loss to essendon in the gf preview to start a win over the pies gave some confidence beating the saints was obvious but then doubling the unbeaten dees and a win over the cats and blues means they were getting the job done but not preitly and big loses to south and the dons again had them dropping a loss to the pies in round 9 was their last of the year coming from 6th to finish 3rd with a 5 game winning streak won all the odd group games but had no major test till the last odd game against essendon which they won setting them up for a finals run beating the pies and dons.
